The $60 billion beauty industry is regulated by ONE AND A HALF pages of legislation and the most recent law passed was in 1938. Gregg Renfrew, the founder of Beautycounter, wanted to make changes and disrupt the industry and that is why she started this company. Here’s an example of her disruption: The US only bans 30 ingredients from beauty products where as Europe bans over 1400; Beautycounter bans 1800. When you look at Beautycounter’s Never List (a list of the ingredients we’ll never include in our products), the harmful effects of those are present and terrifying. These are what you find: cancer causing, toxic, hormone disruptor, irritation, allergies, birth defects…. and THESE ingredients are in SO MANY unregulated products out there.
Want to know one of the worst offenders? “Fragrance.” There are almost no rules on what can be in fragrance. What’s worse is that only 20% of US consumers are even aware of the presence of harmful ingredients in the products they use on their bodies every single day.
As I started with Beautycounter and I started to learn this and so much more, I quickly realized I couldn’t unlearn any of it — so we made changes in our home and family and haven’t looked back.
Here is what I’d like to ask of all of you.
- Please take a look at the EWG website and our Never List and figure out what is in your products. EWG (Environmental Working Group has a database that scores products on health/safety based on the ingredients and is a GREAT resource!)
- Make a change. Pick one item, one area of your routine, something. Think about making changes for YOU. And set a #switchtosafer goal for yourself.
Besides Beautycounter, I haven’t found another company that can make ALL 5 of these statements, have you?
